Ropar Farmer Gets Winning Crop Diversification Formula

Majority of farmers have been struggling to wriggle out of the vicious wheat-paddy cycle, Jinder Singh of Sandhua village, Punjab worked on developing a crop diversification model and have been successful in doing so.

Jinder Singh is 51 years old, owns 3 acres of land and earns upto 12 lakh per crop cycle. He has been awarded Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Krishi Puraskar by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for raising his income substantially following skill development training. It isn’t his first time, in 2011 he was felicited by the Ropar administration and also been feted by the Punjab Agricultural University Kisan club for his diversification Program.  His journey began in 2002 when he attended a training camp organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra. He was struggling to make the ends meet. After the camp Jinder decided to experiment with crop diversification under supervision and sowed tomato, green chilli and capsicum. Results were great, his income surpassed what he had earned over the past 5 years.

“Since 2007, I have been sowing capsicum and cucumber in net-houses and getting 30 quintals and 25 quintals of yield per kanal.”
Jinder says those who taunted him now seek his advice and buy plants from his nursery. “The nursery and bee-keeping have augmented my income.”

There, however, is no alternative to hard work and guidance from experts, says Jinder, who himself has undergone training eight times.
